Bibliothèque d’un Amateur. Richard Prince’s Publications is a publication-bibliography of artists’ books and catalogues conceived by Richard Prince from 1980 to 2020. The book is designed as a library of titles catalogued according to their publishing characteristics and state of wear, effectively cataloguing and photographing a collection that went on display first in Spoleto and then in Paris.
This book is not really a catalogue raisonné, but rather an invitation to browse through the library of an “amateur” and allows us to consider this important aspect of Richard Prince’s work, the practice of collecting books and its incompleteness, here revealed by the “ghosts” of missing books.
Richard Prince is a passionate designer and book collector; this zeal and fervour shines through in many works in which he photographs the books in his collection, turning a publication into an endless library. Bibliothèque d’un Amateur is also the catalogue for the exhibition ‘ALL BOOKS AND SOME PRINTS’ at the Centre de la Photographie Genève (16 March-30 May 2021).
