Over the course of 5 years (2011-2016), Chikara made a series of trips across the USA by Greyhound Bus, without any specific destination in mind.
Combining portraits of bus passengers, views from bus window, and short texts, Whispering Hope illustrates a personal and poignant view on the current state of a nation. With barren landscapes and desolate bus stations, Chikara confines himself to the bus and the stops it makes, creating rules reminiscent of recent works that explore the automation of the camera and the objectification of reality seen on Google street view. Similar to selecting images from the moments captured by the 9 cameras attached to google's moving cars, Chikara selects images from his seat behind the glass of the Greyhound Bus, and the result is a familiar yet distorted American landscape.
